A Sudden Loss on the Concrete
A stranger reached down and pried a worn, tan teddy bear straight from the sleeping man’s curled arms.
The man on the ground did not stir at first. He remained curled sideways on a flattened sheet of cardboard, his dusty sneakers resting against a weathered canvas backpack propped by the fence.
The passerby gripped the plush toy by its torso, turned on his heel, and walked briskly down the residential sidewalk.
Seconds later, the sleeper’s hands twitched against his empty chest. His fingers grasped at the empty air where the worn fabric had rested just moments before.
His eyelids fluttered open, his head jerking up from his makeshift pillow as his gaze darted across the sidewalk. His breathing turned rapid, his mouth falling open as he swept his hands along the gray blanket beside him.
Realizing the toy was gone, he pushed himself upright against the chain-link fence. He buried his dirt-stained palms into his face, his shoulders shuddering as tears tracked through the dust on his cheeks.
An Unexpected Destination
Blocks away, the man in the dark shirt pushed through the glass double doors of a local laundromat.
Rows of front-loading washers hummed under the fluorescent lighting. He walked past empty rolling wire carts and stopped in front of an open machine.
He held the matted, graying teddy bear by its shoulders and inspected its frayed seams. Gently, he set the stuffed bear inside the metal drum and pushed it toward the back.
He swung the round glass door shut until the latch clicked into place. After sliding several coins into the metal slot, he twisted the dial and pressed the start button.
Water began trickling down the glass, soaking into the plush fur. The man stood watching the drum rotate, his hands resting on his hips while the machine tumbled through its rinse cycle.
When the spin cycle finally slowed to a stop, the fur was fluffed, clean, and warm to the touch.
Returning to the Fence Line
Back on the street corner, the older man had not moved from his cardboard pallet. His head hung low between his knees, his hands clasped tightly against his shins.
Footsteps clicked against the concrete, stopping just a few feet from his boots. The older man lifted his chin, blinking through red, swollen eyes.
The stranger was standing over him once again, holding a tall brown paper shopping bag. Poking out over the top rim was the clean, golden head of the teddy bear.
The man bent his knees, lowering the bag until the handles were within reaching distance. He held it steady, waiting for the trembling hands to reach out.
The older man extended his arms slowly, taking the weight of the paper bag into his lap. He reached inside, wrapped both hands around the clean fur of the bear, and lifted it out into the daylight.
He brought the stuffed animal close to his face, breathing in the scent of fresh laundry detergent before setting it safely on the blanket beside him.
What Remained Inside
As the man looked down to fold the empty bag, his fingers brushed against a thick, heavy bundle resting at the very bottom.
His brows drew together in confusion. He peeled the brown paper sides wider, peering directly into the dim interior.
He reached both hands inside and lifted out heavy, paper-banded stacks of hundred-dollar bills. He pulled out one bundle, then another, staring at the green currency resting in his palms.
His jaw dropped open, his chest heaving as he looked up toward the sidewalk, but the stranger was already walking away down the street.
The man pushed himself up onto his feet, clutching the thick bundles of cash firmly against his frayed shirt, tears streaming down his face as he stared into the distance.
